Pool fencing is mandatory throughout Australia. For any pool constructed after 1st September 2018 is covered by the swimming pool act 1992, and swimming pools regulation 2018.
The Australian standard that applies is AS1926.1-2012. Swimming pool fences are also required to comply with the building code of Australia (BCA).
Ensuring pool fences are Complient is the responsibility of the owner and local council, which is authorised to conduct on the spot inspections, certify compliance and issue fines for non-compliance.
All swimming pools that are at a depth of 300mm or higher require fixed pool fencing, including above ground pools and spas.
Swimming pool regulations do not specify what materials fencing are made from; however, the building code of Australia does specify a list of materials if used, are deemed to satisfy the requirements.
The two most common materials used are metal and glass. However, any material can be used depending on budget and aesthetics.
When considering pool fences there are typically 2 options, the minimalist look and a feature. Both are important when designing your pool and surrounding area.
When using glass, the options are semi frameless and frameless, one using posts and one using spigots or slide rales. Aluminum fencing is common and a cheaper option. Black is the best colour to use as it blends in with its surrounds.
Other options are Lazer cut panels, vertical louvers, Timber, bamboo, Stainless steel and iron. If your fence is made from metal the posts need to be earthed, the same applies to glass panels with posts and spigots. Earth free spigots are now available, which saves time and money.
